What I have now learned (only after attending and paying $$$ unfortunately) is there are several traveling Ballet Companies from Russia with names that sound like you will be seeing a performance, while not on the same level as the Marinsky Ballet or the Bolshoi of course, that would at least of a quality to make sense to match the price paid for the tickets. Today, the day after the performance, I started reading reviews online of other performances of the STATE BALLET THEATRE OF RUSSIA (both professional and audience reviews) and many mention the canned music, the unprofessional poor looking sets, uninspired choreography and obvious ensemble problems with the corps de ballet. It did not enter my mind to even think to call and ask. The Hippodrome gave no notice on their websight of there being no live orchestra. You cannot even begin to compare anything between these two performances of Swan Lake. To compare, Prime Orchestra for American Ballet Theatre's Swan Lake at the Kennedy Center last month was almost $20 less expensive than the $109 to this. And other tickets ranged from $60 for the very cheapest seats on up. I foolishly paid the Hippodrome $109 for a ticket to attend this. This is the first time I have ever had this kind of experience with a "professional dance company performing at a professional venue". If you go to any performance anywhere - including your local elementary school choir concert, you are always given a program! If you wanted any information, you had to buy a booklet which was being sold. So, when I bought a ticket to see Swan Lake at the Hippodrome danced by what I thought would be at least a solid and reasonable ballet company with the "NAME" they have-the State Ballet Theatre of Russia, I had no idea there would be:Ī) Canned Music (!!) of an orchestra playing the score -Is this even legal to the Musicians Union for "professional" performances at a venue such as the Hippodrome? There are so many excellent freelance orchestra musicians in the Baltimore Washington area, who can play this score beautifullyī) Sets which are more amateurish than I have ever seen for any "professional" ballet or dance productions,Ĭ) No program for the ushers to give you when you enter the theatre. I have attended ballet and dance performances in New York City at Lincoln Center (both New York City Ballet and ABT) and other NYC venues, The Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, the Lyric in Baltimore and in Philadelphia at the Academy of Music many times over the years. I would NOT WISH THIS ON ANYONE! Except for this very aggressive gazapo type security,& staff, iwould recommend ANY OTHER THEATRE EXCEPT THE HIPPODROME IN BALTIMORE MD He is confused, frighten and physically hurt. A usher pushed the door closed, resulting in a bruise on my sons leg, because he is in awheelchair and his knee"s are vunerable. I pushed pass him got my son and as I was wheeling him through the door. the security man blocked me 3 times from getting my son. He embarrassed my family like we have never seen WE decided to go into lobby to try and talk to this man He told us we had to LEAVE,or we would be removed. With all the airline video fresh in our minds, iwent to try and get my son and leave. My familyof four including our physically disabled son,in a wheelchair, non verbal.went to see ANDYCOHEN/ ANDERSON COOPER on 4-28-17 and spent about 400.00 dollars on tickets.45 min into the show a VERY AGGRESSIVE, RUDE man came up from behind us and told us if he gets another complaint regarding us he will remove us from the theatre. We weren't aware of ANY complaint,my son doesn't even speak. After us trying to question him about this ,he started getting very loud and rude.
